It’s been a weird week. It started off with me having to take Buggie back to the garage because my fan speeds were not working. The girl at the desk became very defensive and I was also defensive that my fan wasn’t working and I wanted it fixed. It boiled down to when I brought my car in my fan was working when I picked it up(well my daughter did),the fan speed was stuck on high. I asked Sachi and she said the fan was on when she picked it up and just thought with the smoke and fires the garage had it running high. So the whole escalated the next day with the owner calling me and really ripping into me about how I was rude and ‘an awful person’ for confronting his daughter. Of course, I said look at it from my side,that I just spent $3000 on the car and I get home and my fan is not working. Well, it volleys back and forth that no way did they do anything to my fan and it must have been my daughter driving it home( which is 10 minutes folks) and cranked the fan on and broke it. Really??? are you kidding me.? no I didn’t say that. I just said, I don’t know what happened but she said the fan was on high when she drove it home and she didn’t touch the dial. I apologized that I offended his daughter but again, my point was my fan is not working. So, in long run, he said he spent ALL DAY fixing something( the switch??). I said thank you and took my keys and left. Obviously, I will never go back for service there. It’s always so weird to me how things can turn into an event when I simply went in saying I want my fan fixed since when I brought it in it was working and when I drove it next the fan was not working. I’m sure I was intense to a degree but not ‘rude’. Oh well, I thought of doing a negative Yelp review, but then just figured why bother?
Other than that, Tuesday I had my labs and my CBC, CMP are all the same pretty much and my Kappas just came in this morning and went up to 22.3 mg/L from 20.1. so an increase but not too dramatic. It seems my numbers are holding steady for the time being.
This morning is my covid booster so I’m planning on doing that and then going to Safeway for a few things and then home. Usually, Saturday is my swim day but I’m leaving that open as I don’t know if I’ll feel lousy or not.
Budget-wise, it was a good week with nothing extra spent except some salad mix, wine, and bananas. bb
I’ve been doing some batch cooking for the freezer. I made beef stew in the Instant Pot and then froze 2 quarts, lentil soup, and froze 2 quarts. A yummy quiche from Le Creuset cookbook. It came out really good with fresh thyme.
I got a lot done around the house yesterday and felt good about that. I changed the shower curtain, we put the rug back down in the bedroom, made the lentil soup, and washed all the couch covers. So everything is fresh for fall. I’m having B take out the cooler in the bed room this weekend and I’ll put up the fall/winter cutains soon.
We finally have rain!!
We had to use umbrellas to walk but that was fine. Nobody was there but us so that’s always a treat.
I made some sugar cookie dough this morning and it’s in the fridge for a few hours to harden some. So I’ll start those a little later. I used an Alton Brown recipe and it was pretty straight forward.
If you follow Flylady, we are in the bathroom zone. I can finish mine in about 15 minutes as our bathroom is so small. I might add on a couple of extra tasks this week as well. I consolidated the Christmas ornaments into 1 larger plastic bin that B had bought at Home Depot. So that’s most of the Hallmark boxes and some felted animals when I use to put them out at Christmas on the nature table. I don’t do that anymore but they’re cute enough to keep for now. In the future, who knows? right.
So, as expected, my kappa light chains went up over 600,( high normal is 26.4) and the ratio also doubled( It was 74.3 mg/l ) normal high is 26.3. So Velcade will start in January. So since it’s 3 weeks on 1 week off, I’m thinking @ the second week of January and then a break the first week of February and so on. I guess we’ll have to see how it’s working as to how many rounds it’ll be. That’s a wait and see kind of thing. But one would hope, if it works on the myeloma, 6 months of treatment. Again, big unknowns since we don’t know how things will go. Disappointing but reality.
Tonight I’m cooking a roast chicken in my cast iron pan and I think I’ll make some buttered noodles to go with it as we are potatoed out from latkes. i wanted to get down to Krispy Kreme for donuts( you know to keep the cooking in oil thing going for Hanukkah:) but that may not happen.
B is actually going down for a doctor visit this week as I think they want to see him in person. I’m going to write a list of things for him to bring up because they continue to bother him. He is supposed to get his pneumonia shot and soon he will start revaccinating. I never did revaccinations as back in 2006 it wasn’t common then. Now, I think with autos it is. It is absolutely necessary with an allo transplant though as he had donor cells.
Well, I think I’m going to finish my Sunday chores and read some more of the Obama memoir. BTW, it is a great book and so full of compassion and insight. Definitely worth buying . One thing that really stood out to me was how many times he went to Walter Reed to see the wounded soldiers and how he would interact with them. I tried to look up how many times trump did it but I only found the 1 time shortly after his inauguration. I guess he couldn’t handle seeing the soldiers with one leg or arm or whatever. What a guy!:(

One weird number I’ve never even looked at (liver function ALT) went up out of normal by a few points. I’m guessing since I started the Keto diet that I’m eating a lot of full-fat food. I’ve felt great on this keto but I haven’t really lost the weight that people rave about. Maybe I’ve lost 3 pounds but nothing remarkable. I do know my body does like homeostasis and my weight doesn’t just drop away. Still, after this amount of time, I’ll just back off some.
I’m not sure if I’m in full ketosis and that might be the reason. Anyway, I’ll probably back off the full-fat stuff for a while but keep on low carb and proteins which I’ve enjoyed. I’ve given it a good trial period but think it’s time to just eat my ‘normal’ stuff.
I definitely haven’t missed sugar at all but then again I’m not so much as a ‘sweet’ person but rather ‘savory’. Not having beans and rice has been easy too. I just substitute lettuce stuff. Well, I’ll see how that ALT number is on my next labs. Obviously, something was going on as it’s always been in the low 20’s range. Even when I looked back over the last year so the Keto must have had an impact.
Today is a gym day for me.
B has his pulmonary test scheduled and my daughter will take him to Roseville.
Yesterdays BMB went exceptionally well. The NP did the procedure and I could tell she was going to do a good job. Of course, no matter what they still hurt like hell.
The book giveaway is still happening with the brand new book “lightly” by Francine Jay. she is one of the pioneers of the minimalist movement in the last 10 years or so.
While we were camping we went thru the tent trailer an got rid of all the weird kitchen stuff I had in there. A whole box worth. I mean really, am I going to use a vegetable peeler while camping?? Plus, we took out a box of dishes as we really only use the same 2 over and over. We probably eliminated 3 boxes of stuff including some clothes that were for “just in case’. That was really great to do. It’s all dropped off at the Goodwill and I didn’t even go back thru to see whether I wanted it in the house.
I started making some homemade bread again. I used the Zojirushi to make the dough and then bake in my bread pan. My daughter got me a fancy new bread knife for my birthday so I had to make bread. It was amazing to cut the bread. It sliced thru like soft butter. It always surprises me how having a good tool for cooking or like a sharp knife makes cooking so much better. I don’t use a lot of fancy tools but what I have does make the job of cooking so much better.
Recently, I got rid of our rice maker and started using my Le Creuset. Organic long grain white rice takes only 18 minutes and then let sit for 15 minutes. It’s actually quicker than the rice maker. So one less bulky thing in the kitchen.
Yesterday i cleaned out more pantry stuff. I have a good size bag to give to the food bank.
I had my labs Monday but no results yet so I’m guessing he’s out of town. That’s the only time when my esults get delayed. I’ll wait till Thursday then I’ll call his nurse.
Today I’m washing the white couch covers as this week is the living room zone. I also need to do the outside window as I do these quarterly.
The garden is done and I am done with canning tomatoes. There are still some apples but they can wait. Last night we had butternut squash soup with our very own butternut squash. I also made a spaghetti squash and had that with butter and sage.
An old friend from my ‘metaphysical’years got a hold of me last week. It was nice to reconnect. Her sister had just died and I think it caused her to do some thinking about times gone by. We plan on getting together in a few weeks. She lives in Reno so not too far away. I will drive up for lunch!!
