Friday Stuff

We’re still in the storm pattern here and I 80 is closed again. This kind of snow and weather hasn’t happened in years. I think the last time I remember snow like this was 1988 or so. Truly amazing amounts of snow have fallen in the Tahoe area.

My daughter still hasn’t been able to get there. Yesterday she got 1/2 way and had to turn around because cars were sliding all over. Too dangerous.  I told her if the library director complains take it to the CEO of Nevada City and say if it’s too dangerous to drive then it’s just too dangerous.

We’re off to infusion this morning for Barclay to get platelets. Good news is that his hemoglobin is at 10.6. That is very good news. So he does not need a transfusion.

Also good news, the nurse coordinator is calling his brothers today and the donor kits will be sent out Overnight express. So we are moving forward and should know if they are a match in about a month. So very good news there too.

I’m going to the gym and then pick a few groceries at Safeway for pizza tonight. I thought I’d get mushrooms, olives and maybe artichokes.  I have the pizza dough rising right now and will put in the fridge before we leave.

Our very old neighbor left with his son late yesterday. Someone came and boarded up the broken window. But there’s still no power and if the roof was leaking it’s probably a mess in there. But at least he’s safe. We’re looking at taking down maybe 2 or more trees but it really does depend on money. We will need to be very careful as we still need to cover the $6000 deductible for the transplant and lodging is our responsibility and donor costs such as the flights and hotel while getting the marrow. So lots on our plate financially.   But I know from what we felt in the past when we removed the huge trees, I think this next set of trees will also feel great. I mean there’s always a chance some random tree could fall but at least we would have done what we thought was the most likely.  The way our neighbor’s tree fell was really unpredictable. So who knows?

A weird week really.  Really weird….

falling trees

I didn’t IMG_0197.jpgget to see the first one go but I did video the second, but WordPress doesn’t let me put the video on for some reason.

It was pretty impressive going down. They used lots of ropes to guide it and then their large truck to  pull the tree. both down on the ground but not bucked up, so hubby has a lot of work ahead of him. He has a fairly new chainsaw, but I think I see a bigger one in his future.  Let’s hope we don’t need another tree down for a while although I think we’d better start a tree fund.

Rainy here today.

Went to Costco, then to our coffee lunch, then home.

I bought paint for the bedroom and will start tomorrow.  It’s so nice to do normal things and feel normal. Yeah!!!

another tree goes…

The other night @ 10 pm we all hear this huge crack and boom. It was too dark to see anything but we sorta figured it was one of our bark beetle trees that’s dead. Big surprise, we see in the morning that it’s a huge oak that has cracked apart and barely misses out neighbors house. This was a huge branch from a huge oak.  That evening @ 7 my husband hears this crack and pop. Sure enough another branch off this huge oak lands on our side of the fence. it must be the drought that has caused these trees to just give up. Even though we had a good winter with rain it wasn’t enough after 5 years of drought. So that leaves one huge branch left on this tree.

We also have a very large oak near our house. It wouldn’t hit the house if it fell but it would squish cars!! So we called a guy we had gotten a number of that cuts trees very reasonably. Remember the one guy said he’d have to bring the crane and then were looking at another $1800 minimum. so this guy will rope the branches down and will do it for $5oo. what a deal. I can’t wait. Of course, I will leave as I’m too nervous to watch these things. I just have a feeling that our oak is going to crack and go. We know it has had ants in it and water damage in some holes. So it’s only a matter of time.  So, were gone 2 weeks off an on so, it’ll have to be after that. the good part will be oak fire wood.

It’s another hot day of 102 ,ugh…I hate the heat.

Dinner : Taco Tuesday. I’m buying to hot to cook.

If a tree falls…

I cannot believe it. We’re on the patio getting ready to grill our beautiful organic steak I purchased from organic meats. And all of a sudden we hear a huge crack and see our neighbours’ tree fall hitting two other trees. There was NO WIND or anything. Boom! it just went. I totally freaked. I can not believe this could happen when there was not even a breeze. Fortunately, the tree fell away from our neighbor’s house. He is quite elderly, lives alone and has poor hearing. But he managed to come outside and check it out. We were already over there looking. This was not even a dead tree. Still green.  Now I’m seriously thinking we’d better start budgeting for the next set of trees we want out. There’s about 3 that still are leaning in so….. Too crazy.

Yesterday was still a dex day but I went to town and then to the Koffee Klatch to catch up with everyone. It’s nice to get to socialize a little. I’m quite an introvert so, normally I don’t do things like this, but I’ve come to enjoy this group.

I also started a new level of minimalizing. I’m reading ‘The More with Less’ by Joshua Becker which I will review at a later time. But he does point out some things that spurred me into getting rid of old earrings and little stuff I never use. More stuff to goodwill. Plus getting rid of the whole set of dishes has opened shelves for pantry stuff to be more organized. I also got rid of some very old books(1940’s) that had been bought at a library sale and obviously no has cracked open.  Plato? well, maybe in college, but certainly not now.  So good. I can really see the results. I’m going to write a whole blog or series on this process soon.

Today, my daughter and I are going to a new nursery to get tomato plants and some other things. Should be fun. We’re eating lovely lettuce and peas from the garden right now.
