The week ahead looks nice. We are in for some rain tonight and tomorrow.
I skipped the gym today and went to Home Depot with B so we could get a bathroom fan and a few other things. I want to have him put up another safety bar in the bathroom as well. Mostly because our tub is a clawfoot and sits high. Either we need to change that out as we get older or do some other things( like the bar) to help with stability.
Yesterday was one of the nicest days we’ve had. I fired up the BBq and made chicken and BBQ tempeh. I made a macaroni salad to go with it. We even ate outside, the first this year!!
This week we’re going to go to Ikea too and check out ideas for redoing the counter and sink area of the kitchen. There’s not much we can do to change the layout because of where doors are and such. I’m interested in a farmhouse sink and would like quartz countertops. All our appliances are new so that part is done.
As you can see it’s really just one wall of counter with the sink in the middle. The stove is to the left of the second photo.
Ikea is great to get ideas from. I’d like to replace the kitchen window to as it is starting to get a few cloudy spots. The cabinets I’d like to replace with something more modern. We can’t really have them as open shelves as we wouldn’t have any place to keep spices and teas and things I just don’t want visible.
We redid the whole kitchen after we moved in. It was gutted and we took up like 20 layers of linoleum. It was brutal work. So the kitchen is 23 years old. Except we just bought the appliances in the last 2 years.
Other than that, it should be a nice week for some fun things to do.
My daughter put together the Ikea Shelves for B and they look very nice. The last piece is the file cabinet. There will be loads of space to put folders, books etc. But, I will want at least half of one shelf empty…one empty 1/2 shelf. In all our bookcases ( we have 2 small ones and a larger teak one) I’m trying to keep to the one empty shelf theme. At least one-half of a shelf. It seems to help with not stuffing everything into the shelves just because there is room. Less stuff, more space.
We still need to drop off the big desk that’s sitting in my van and a bookcase that needs to go. That won’t happen till Saturday since B is gone till late Friday afternoon and it’s too big for me to move and at Goodwill, they won’t help unload due to liability. So, that will have to wait till then.
My son’s birthday is next week and he already got a present in us paying for his car to be fixed. A very expensive present. But, I’m going to get him a gift card for gas as a little present.
WE live in a fairly rural area but close to a main town( Auburn). We rarely see homeless or transients but this last 2 weeks there have been at least 5 weird incidents around here.
Three people had break ins( a car, a garage and something else I can’t remember). Then we saw a person walking thru town last week who was definitely out of character for our little town. no shirt, tons of tattoos ( I’m not prejudiced about tattoos but no shirt and the combination was weird. Plus he seemed out of sorts. ( my projection) BUT on our neighbor hood watch, someone said this guy, no shirt, tattoos, only a pair of slip on shoes, knocked on their door at 10;30 AT NIGHT asking for a drink of water, and a cigarette. WTF???? This was not too far from our house. So clearly something weird and I’m trying not to be too freaked. We usually never lock doors etc. But this week I’ve locked doors and today I’m actually going to buy some mace( pepper spray) for the house. We don’t own guns or anything defensive so….
The other thing is I’ve wanted to install gates at our 2 driveways. I know they could still go over them but gates are a deterrent so. I priced them out and it’ll be @ $200 for each one. So I think well start with one. Of course, we need 2 because our driveway splits and goes in 2 directions. But it’s a start.
It’s very hot here again. It’s supposed to be 104 today. This has been a wicked hot summer so far.
Dinner is whatever Wednesday, so????
So, we had to buy a new front door after this happened.
Out front door was a French door with 2 panels on either side. So this winter, the inside of the dual panes started to get condensation. The door was 20 years old. But then last week I heard a pop and snap and one of the panels completely cracked. A project we were putting off till who knows when now had to be done pronto. That meant rebuilding a new door frame and the wall next to it as the other door had 3 doors and this new one would just be single.
I found a nice inexpensive Craftsman style door and we went down to Lowes to pick it up. Then B pulled the old door out and rebuilt the frame. So it looks quite nice. The plywood on the other side isn’t done yet but will be soon. then we will have to put up shake shingles to match the house and then paint.
But we also pulled everything out of the room and including his desk and realized the desk was just too dark and big to put back in. I have it listed for Free on a local group site.
So, of course, one thing leads to another and we’ve emptied the room and will put back only what is useful and beautiful. We decided to go down to Ikea as they had a certain desk on the family discount ending today. We looked at it and decided it was too big too so we picked a smaller one, a BIlly book shelf and a filing cabinet.
But then we decided that since everything was out and we had a package of unused flooring to get more of the same and redo the floor. We’re not pulling up the vinyl tiles as it will help be an insulator as this original was just a porch. So more projects. Everything is all over the place ( which is like craziness for me), but I will endure. By the weekend, all will be back to normal( I hope).
We decluttered another huge load from the barn 2 bookcases, lots of little stuff and a rug. so that is good and now, the barn is looking so good with the extra shelves for my son’s (crap) of stuff…. I’m sure it’s useful in his eyes.
that’s it for now. Dinner is Taco Tuesday. Black bean quesadillas.
We went to Ikea to get a new cover for the one Poang chair we have. We decided to declutter the 2 mission style chairs and get another Poang. They are made of a birch wood so much lighter and they are a smaller footprint.
If you get their family card, you can get their free coffee with organic half and half. We had a cup but no breakfast as we had already eaten at home.
If you’re like me I burn candles year round and Ikea candles smell good and are inexpensive and don’t have nasty stuff in them. The orange is my favorite.
So for now, the pile for my son’s yard sale is growing with 2 Mission style chairs added.
I’m making enchiladas in the Lodge tonight for Taco Tuesday.
Well ,probably not since we went to Ikea for the day bed that was on sale. It was a good deal and has drawers under the bed for storage. Plus it was 15% off so that’s why we did it. Inspite of what alot of people say about Ikea, I find there stuff well made and I love the Danish/Scandanavian look.
I bought some LED bulbs and will go back or more a good price of 3.99 each. I wanted to try them before committing to them and I do. Let see, candles, which are a necessary part of life for me(3.99 ea), a throw, toilet brush and holder and the Ikea Fjalla boxes which I’ve been wanting so I can reorganize pictures.
We ate breakfast there and the coffee was organic and pretty tasty and free. So a fun date with B.
Dinner is crockpot pot roast with vegies and mushroom stroganoff with buttered noodles for the vegie!
Tomorrow are my big labs, SPEP test and Kappa/Lambda light chains. I had my thyroid test last week and they were both normal. The dose of levothyroxine I’m on is still perfect.
Today marks the 3 years of the JUST KEEP WALKING PROJECT. Wow, tomorrow we start year 4. I’m not really walking any faster or longer overall, just walking. Sunrise is @ 5:39 am so it’s pretty bright out at the park when we get there. We’re getting there @ 5:45 am. I’d like to be out earlier but it’s ok, I don’t feel too OC about it all. So hurray for us!!!
Our weather is quite hot and will get a little hotter by Friday…100 degrees. B got the pool filled and its ready to go except the pump must have died and he just ordered a new one. We’ve had this Costco pool going on 8 years. It’s been a great investment. I don’t think it was over $5oo. They don’t sell them anymore. This is probably the last year of this pool but we will get some sort of replacement as we both use it all summer.
I moved my desk out of the bedroom as I wanted the space more. So, I put the Ikea cart in the extra room ( previously my daughter’s bedroom, but a weird space as it was a porch we closed in). I was a little surprised that I don’t have all that much office stuff to organize. But I’m going to buy a wall mounted file thing and some smallish bins for pens or whatever. But I hardly need the Ikea cart but will keep it there till I give it some time.Ikea cart My minimalism is paying off with very reduced office stuff. I will give away or sell the other desk unless we can find another use for it.
So, today is tidy the house, one load of laundry, Target( for the bins) and that’s it. Maybe do some weeding but definitely water garden stuff.
Tomorrow is my doctor appointment and Velcade.
Here in northern california we’ve had some really awful fires in the Napa area. Over 400 homes have burned and many displaced families pets, horses, wildlife . Our air had been very smokey. But great news, this afternoon the weather has change. Cooler and we actually got rain. What a blessing.
In other news, tomorrow , I get another CBC panel to see what my neutrophils are. But the update isn’t good. At least in my opinion. My m spike remained at .9 , so that was good. But still on 4 mg of Pom , I hoped to get a response. And my light chains went from 890 to 1040. He wants to do another cycle, so I will, but honestly, I think Pomalyst really isn’t going to work for me. I’m not looking forward to the next line of treatment but , that’s what’s in store. I’d be pretty shocked if Pom drops my numbers this cycle.
So, we went to Ikea yesterday. Always really a fun place to look at all the arrangements they make and neat things. We got the doors for the Pax closet we bought years ago and well, never finished. And some curtains for my daughters redone room. If you need curtains at a totally reasonable price, IKEA is the place. Both pairs with 2 curtains were 29 each. That’s a great price.
Tomorrow, I’m dropping off a huge load to goodwill and then some items to the Cancer thrift store that are too nice for goodwill. One is a brand new spiralizer ,used a few times, and the other a brand new mandolin for vegies. After I cut my self on the mandoline, I decided it wasn’t the kinda kitchen tool I wanted to keep.
I can use a knife or a veggie peeler to make ribbons. ( which I don’t really do. )
It was Rosh Hoshannah yesterday at sundown. This is the Jewish new year. Of course we’re not Jewish but for some reason I like the Jewish holidays a lot. So L’Shanah Tovah!!! Happy new year.
I like to think this is the beginning of a new and healthy year. We shall see.
