We have smokey skies from the Yosemite fire this morning and the sun is an orange ball. The temperature seems cooler but we’re still expecting a high of 98 today. I do hope the firefighters can get this under control. There’s already been a mandatory evacuation down near Mariposa. ugh… fire is scary! We had a nice walk though, and no one showed up while we were there.
I read a few newer books this week including Josuha Becker’s” Things that matter”. I liked it well enough, not remarkable but still a good read. Then Kellerman’s new book “City of Dead”. He’s always pretty scripted but I still like his writing. Then by Kumiko Love( I wonder if that’s her real last name), “My Money, My Way. ” She basically takes most of her ideas from people like Dave Ramsey and others but I still like her presentation and I thought it a worthwhile read about money and budgets. I put a few canning books on hold and I’m still contemplating the pressure canner. I did decide that the All American is too expensive for me (over $ 400) but the Presto is $160 or so and that may be a better beginner option. I’m definitely not interested in pressure canning chicken or beef etc but there are some things I would do that need a pressure canner like chicken broth.
I made some refrigerator bread and butter pickles yesterday, and they looked good. We didn’t plant cucumbers for some reason so I bought 3 at the Farm and got 2 jars out of them.
Here are some of the onions I harvested. I’m thrilled to get some onions.
This morning I started the sourdough bread and will let it do a slow rise overnight and bake tomorrow early. I also made a pie crust for the goat cheese quiche I’m making later. The best pie crust I’ve found is from Joanna Gaine’s book” Magnolia Table”. I’ve made it numerous times and it comes together very easy.
The Flylady zone is the living room zone. I did most of it already but I still need to dust the tops of the Easton Press books.
This week I plan to do a Winco trip for a few things, and B has labs on Wednesday in Rocklin so I’ll see about him stopping at Costco again for a few more things. Other than that, trying to stay cool, and doing my normal stuff.
It’s cloudy today. I guess no BBQ tonight. That’s ok, I have plenty of things I can cook. Because of chickens laying so many eggs, I will make a quiche of some sort. I have the pie crust in the refrigerator chilling. I don’t know why I resist making crusts. In the food processor it took all of 2 minutes to get it to form a ball and then into the fridge.
This morning I have already done the bedroom zone, made the quiche crust, windexed the mirrors and am still needing to vacuum.
I also paid the UCD bill for April by phone. I still need to do Allstate some time this week. That’s not due till April as well but I might as well do it sooner than later. I can remember vividly when we had zero money to pay bills on time and always had to do payments. Even our property taxes we had to arrange. Grocery shopping was limited and there was NO extra money for anything. I am grateful that we can pay what we need to. There’s not a lot left over but to me that’s fine as long as the basics are paid.
My son, who spends money like crazy,:) asked for a special edition Rockstar Pendleton for his birthday so I will do that too. It’s a throw size and quite stunning in reds and blacks with men on horses riding facing forward. I guess it’s from some game he plays.
The kitchen is back together and next we will move on to the entryway and B’s cubby. The one wall was actually an outside wall so it’s the siding on the house. It’s painted in the Navajo White I used originally around the house. We’re planning to use the semi gloss on that and the other siding too. I don’t think we’ll start this week but maybe Saturday. This area was a deck that we built right after we moved and remodeled. So 26 years ago. Then at some point we closed it in as room. At some point we should make the foundation of it up to code as it is only on foundation blocks. i don’t know maybe that would work but I doubt it and it would need concrete. Well, that’s out of my zone of things to think about.
Today is our no walk day and I don’t plan on going anywhere.
I had a plant disaster, where a plant that was is too small a pot and had some long growth on it, caught on my leg and fell not once but twice. It dumped dirt all over the floor but the second time was worst as it fell into my file crate. It took 2 vacuum bags to clean up and really set my day off to a frustrating start.
It was my goal to do a “Five Things Friday” but somehow it just got away from me. After my morning walk and house chores, I went to the gym. I got there right before 10am and that’s one of the busier times. There were people on all the machines and the classes were in full swing. Somehow I was able to find an empty treadmill and did around 18 minutes while watching some of the nightly shows. After I finished, I did my normal weight routine. After my workout, I felt like this.
After the gym, I went to the pharmacy, and my prescription wasn’t there. So then I had to call down to the Cancer Center to find out where it was sent. After talking to the nice receptionist, she said it was at my Auburn pharmacy. But since it wasn’t there yet, I said just send it to Optum RX as they will be the ones to refill it anyway. I was somewhat annoyed but just went with it. But I was going to go to Goodwill and Home Depot but I just gave up on doing anything else and came home.
The town seemed so busy so I just gave up on doing anything else.
I made a nice mushroom onion quiche for dinner.
I worked out in the garden a while clipping lemon balm, catnip, and oregano. They just grow so big and all over.
BTW, yesterdays doctor appointment went well. For you myeloma people, he said the new non -live shingles vaccine is a go. Plus the new bone strengthener, XGEVA, is now available and is an injection not, an infusion. So that’s all good news. Plus, I don’t need to see him again till August. Yay!! I’ll still get my blood work every 7 weeks or so. I’m too nervous a person to wait a full 10-12 weeks.
We had a nice walk this morning. The park was empty when we got there but then 10 minutes later quite a few cars were showing up. On Sundays, we get there a little later as we stay in bed just a few minutes more. So it was 6:20 about. Sunrise is 6:45 now and gaining a minute a day. This coming Friday is the equinox and my husbands birthday. A Virgo on the cusp.
We’re planning an overnight at a place in the Sierras.
Not at Lake Tahoe but to the NE. It’s a place that is designed in the Frank Llyod Wright style so I’m interested to see it. Mostly, I think, people golf there but I know there are some walking trails too. It’s quite expensive but B bought this as a Groupon like 2 years ago so we need to use it.
Today is a gym day. Then I need just a few things from the store. I thought I’d make some homemade brownies but I need some dutch cocoa. PLus I need cream and lemons.
Dinner is a quiche (I think). We have a ton of eggs to use so that seems logical.
We’re also going to do another garbage run as we have a huge pile(again) of stuff from around the yard. There are the poles from the old pool and a used tarp and the old doors that we replaced. So, after we get back from town we’ll go do that. It’s at the end of the road we live on so pretty convenient.
Fall is in the air and last night we had our first fire in the firepit. It was cozy and I had made a delicious curried lentil soup. A great recipe and a keeper.
I've been married for nearly 15 years to a wonderful husband and I'm a mom to three great kids ages 12, 11 and 9. Oh, and I just happen to have cancer. Multiple Myeloma is a cancer of the blood that is currently incurable but IS considered highly treatable! My goal is to make people laugh, cry or feel a little less alone whether you are a mom, cancer patient or BOTH!
