We are getting things ready to head up to Tahoe Friday. The damn AC in the truck has stopped working just like I said it would. It wasn’t the freon. Well, now there’s nothing we can do till next week so we might as well not get too pissed off. But I think they are trying to pull a fast one on us and now that we have the warranty they have to fix it. Still a PITA to have to drop it off and so on. But on a positive note it won’t be hot in Tahoe and we certainly are not going to need AC. As a matter of fact the mornings are going to be quite cool with a low of 28.
I have most of the food organized and a menu plan done. I’m going to hit the store tomorrow for just a few things. Overall, very simple. There’s no wood or charcoal fires allowed so no Hibachi cooking or Dutch Oven. Also, no fires at night.
I’ve got a big bag of books from the used bookstore so that should fill up my days. Plus we plan on some hiking. Nothing too strenuous just some walking. We plan to not go even into South Lake because of the fire issue. (The fire is not threatening south lake but I want to stay clear anyway.
I need to get labs Friday so we will leave after that. Because we are trailering I suspect it’ll take a little longer than normal and we have to go slower too. As long as everything goes okay with the truck we should hit the campground by 1pm or so. September is lovely in Tahoe and it should be beautiful with nice days and cool nights. Barclay has a birthday next week so we might do a lunch out.
It’s going to be another nice spring day. We didn’t walk this morning but will tomorrow. Sunday is my favorite day for walking as usually, no one is there. But this Sunday, B has his transfusion scheduled for 8 am. He doesn’t get labs till tomorrow at 3pm so we won’t know what he needs till after that. So getting out the door will be too rushed if we try and walk at 7am.
Today is going to be a fun day as we are driving up to Tahoe, actually, Incline to go to the Marijuana store for B to get some edibles and may the oil. He can’t smoke anything as he signed an agreement not to while undergoing the transplant. So just the chocolates and something else.
Then we’ll go to Truckee for lunch.
The dogs will be home outside so we need to time it so they’re not out for too long. I think we’ll be gone for about 5 hours.
Here’s a couple of pictures of the Ikea cabinet we got for the bathroom. Funny, it’s really the only thing that would have fit there so I guess I was spot on.
I’m planning on painting the tub black and we’re hoping to replace the floor this summer or fall depending on if B will be well enough or we may hire someone to do it.
This is one of my most favorite prints. I found this at a garage sale many years ago.
It’s been another frustrating week with NYC corrections not answering my emails about our original marriage license and then LLS (leukemia lymphoma society) denied my insurance claim because the breakdown in the forms we have doesn’t have B as the Assoc. alone. It shows him plus one. So that was not good enough for them even though that’s how I’ve been doing it since last June. Go figure. I resubmitted everything again with an additional form we found that shows his health credits but it still only shows him plus one. So I’m not going to sweat it although I was pretty nasty on the phone saying that was all we had to show it.
Since I’ll be switching to Medicare by June 1st I can just wait till then as they do cover Medicare. I did speak to an insurance agent and actually got MORE info. Wow, It’s amazing anyone figures this stuff out. So I need to get a form from B’s HR stating I won’t be on his insurance and then go into SS office for them to process. Then I add the plan F and Part D. He was helpful in that he said to go with the less expensive drug coverage as right now I don’t need the chemo drugs. And actually, in the future, I would ask for only infusions so that would be covered by Part B. I can’t see me going back on Revlimid since I became refractory to it. But if that does happen I can change the plan in January ( I think that’s what he said).
So at least I know the next step.
Dinner is some kind of pizza. I’m not making one so it may be a frozen one.
It is a beautiful fall day.
We had a lovely walk in the park this morning and it was quite empty except for our geese friends. The Canada geese babies have all grown up and have flown away. Once in a while, we see them circle around the pond. There are other lakes around here and I imagine they hang out there too.
I made another pie in a tin dish and froze it on the recommendation of blogger Hilary. I just took it out of the oven and it smells and looks amazing so I will try and do at least a couple of pies this way for fall.
I went to Target and got another case of pint jars for the applesauce which I will start tomorrow. I figure I can get most of the one box of apples done. The second box is staring at me already but will have to wait.
We leave for Tahoe on Friday and will be gone a week. It’s a different time to be up there but certainly, most crowds are gone. Evenings will be chilly but we can sit by the fire or inside the tent trailer. Usually, we play scrabble or I read. We are taking the kayaks so we will go out at least 2 times to make it worth bringing them. We might drive down to Sand Harbor( quite a ways back on the lake) and go out from there. Sand Harbor State Beach is where many of the famous shots/pictures of Tahoe are with the big boulders and beautiful blue water.
I’m planning a few Lodge meals and other than that just simple foods. Plus the grocery store is like half a mile away.
Since the tent trailer does not have a shower we’ll go to the gym up there, work out and then shower. My main criteria for a new trailer is a shower/toilet.
I made organic long grain rice for dinner and we’re having burritos with rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, lettuce.
It has been a mixed bag this week of frugal things. I’m not spending any money except a few dollars here and there on groceries. I made myself a challenge to only spend $50. I still have $30 left but I need some sliced cheese and something, can’t remember.
Yesterday at Tahoe was not frugal. The tickets for thunderbird lodge are expensive but it goes to the upkeep of this amazing place.
Then the tour took much longer than I expected so we were late for our lunch at Gar Woods. We had a reservation for 1pm and got there at 1:47. I had called to let them know but I don’t think it made any difference. The place was a madhouse of people. Plus there were no vegetarian options. I mean WTF, we’re not back in 1975. So B had a salad and I had a burger. Okay, nothing special. $60 later plus tip we left.
It was a lovely day though and Tahoe was picture perfect.
Also, with my daughter’s Honda, we put the bill on our credit card so that was pretty hefty. She will pay us back as this was not a freebie.
Overall, not a frugal week but fun and necessary!!!
I decided to go with B up to South Lake while he worked at Grass Roots Community store.
The official summer season start s July 4 so this was the calm before the storm. But it was still quite busy. The roads weren’t backed up yet but the hotel we stay at (Lakeland) was booked solid. Plus we went out for a glass of wine and the place was packed. But the weather was spectacular and Lake Tahoe is the fullest I think I ever remember it being. It’s just in the summer there is way too many people and everything is congested. On the main boulevard, it can take an hour to get from the Nevada border to the Y which is where Hwy 50 comes in.
We drove home the Emerald Bay side and that’s always lovely.
With me not being able to do any walking it was tough to just sit around. But until I get an ‘official’ prognosis of my stress fracture and what to do about it, I don’t want to walk unnecessarily. Really tough for me:(
It was a nice mini get away.
Dinner is an order out pizza!!
The Donner State Park is located in Truckee, Ca. There is a quite large campground with 3 loops. Two are closed right now as the season hasn’t really started. We are in a lovely spot and there is almost no one here camping. The bathrooms are new and the showers look nice. We have another night here and then home. But except the fact that you can hear I -80 it is really nice. I probably wouldn’t want to be here in the high season but still the camp spots are really spaced nicely.
B is actually working and seeing some accounts, so that’s kinda cool. We are in Tahoe City right now and then need to hit the grocery store for some dinner stuff. Also B had traded out for a new propane tank but last night we went to turn on the heater and there was nothing. So we need to stop and have it checked or buy a new one. It’s going to quite chilly tomorrow morning and so we will need some heat.
We also brought the bikes, soI’m going to bike around some this afternoon. We’re heading down to another account in King’s Beach and then going to get some lunch ( I think). We might stop at one of the Lake Tahoe beaches for pebbles. There’s one I remember that had black ones but can’t quite remember where it was.
We leave tomorrow but another day would have been nice to as tomorrow suppose to be 71 degrees.
I’m grateful for my husband who works extraordinarily hard to support his family.
We have excellent health care as long as he continues to work full time and our son is covered till his 26th birthday, which will be right around the time my husband retires.
This next year I have some specific financial goals, one being, paying off the Santa Fe or at least most of it so B can get a small car like a Hyundai Elantra. Since he will still get a car stipend thing, he can use that instead of racking up more miles on the SF which we need to pull the tent trailer. We will sell either the van or my VW. I’m guessing the van but who knows.
Today is a gym day and I need to go to Safeway for a few things like milk. Then this coming week is Flylady’s kitchen zone. I’ll probably start today and at least wipe the cabinets.
Our week looks dry and sunny but still cool, only @ 60 degrees high.
Beautiful Lake Tahoe!
Just going away for 2 days puts a spin on things that need to be done daily.
We came home and I put the things from the overnight away, planned some bean tacos for dinner and tidied a few things that needed to be done. Mostly this amounts to just putting things away that have been left out. Since my daughter was home alone, it can add up… chickens, getting the wood, dog care, cat care. All by one person, so it’s a lot.
But since our house is tiny, it doesn’t take long to put those misplaced things back. A few towels to the laundry, a few pieces of junk, mail in the garbage, etc.
We had a great time in South Lake Tahoe and it snowed over the peaks last night so it was beautiful.
Here’s a picture of Emerald Bay.
That’s the only island in Tahoe and has the remains of the stone tea house that was built as part of Vikingsholm. If you’re ever there be sure to hike down to see the house. It is truly a marvel especially since it was built when roads were still dirt through the mountains.
Todd Borg, a local author, who writes murder mysteries all taking place in Tahoe just released his new book, Tahoe Payback. It starts out with murder on tea island. Great book and he really writes about the amazingness of Lake Tahoe. Plus, he mentions places to visit and real places to actually dine. Lots of fun.
I’m back home for a few days. I have to get my labs this morning and then the solar eclipse is happening, which I won’t look at.( No really, I don’t have the glasses).
I’m not too nervous about my labs but this is one of the longest spaces I’ve had between tests ( about 7 Weeks), so we’ll see.
Then I’m going to the gym, workout, and then home to get ready to go back up to Zephyr Cove. My daughter and I had a great time together and now B and I will be up there to celebrate our 47 th wedding anniversary. Wow, that certainly makes you feel old. 🙂
Here’s our Lodge pizza night
Then me on the beach early am.
Then the lake.
We had an amazing thunder, hail, rain storm that lasted about 45 minutes. Everything got soaked. We were cozy in the tent trailer but it took some clean up the next morning. The screen shelter we bought for over the table was nice but didn’t really do anything in this kind of rain so we may go buy an EZ up anyway. It would keep the rain off the table. ( I think).
So, I post more pictures in a day or two.
We’re off in a few days for 2 weeks at my favorite place on Earth. Lake Tahoe. It’s where I want my ashes dropped or at least in the vicinity(ha, ha,).
But the first night it’s just the 2 of us. Then the next day B has to come home because our son is having a surgical procedure and it will involve anesthesia so someone needs to take him and bring him home. So, my daughter will drive up with the dogs for 3 nights and then B will come back up on Sunday. It will be a little juggling around till Monday and then we should be good. Someone has to be here to take care of the 2 cats and the goat and chickens. Plus watering gardens. I’ll drive back down myself probably Monday.
But overall it should be wonderful will nice temperatures and even cool at night.
I’ve been packing dry food and others things. I also put out the 2 Lodges to take.
Mostly it’ll be relaxing, reading and walking. This year we bought a screened tent to put over the table. It may rain so this would help some. I didn’t want to get an EZ up after I saw how big they are and they weigh a lot. Usually, we try and buy one new item each camping season to add to our gear.
Nothing new on the dog front. Haven’t seen the lady or her dogs so I’m hoping she’s not coming to the park at all.
I’m excited I tried making bagels and they came out pretty good. I’d ordered a few things from King Arthur Flour and one was non diastatic barley malt powder. It’s what makes NY bagels , well, NY bagels. I think they came out great but my oven wasn’t calibrating (which it does from time to time) so the heat wasn’t coming up to 425. So it was a little hit and miss.
a little fuzzy on the last picture
