Remembering

-c3a688de2d9ee00bI have a dream.

I was raised mostly by my mother(absent alcoholic father) who was very racist. She really hated Puerto Ricans and blacks. Why?? I really have no idea. She was raised in NYC and went to Catholic schools.

I on the other hand at even an early age had a tremendous affinity for black people. When I was in high school, I think it was 11th grade, that summer I volunteered in a town called Newberg that had a program for “underprivileged black youth”. I remember just starting to drive and it was frankly a little scary. That year as well I was chosen as the class representative to meet a civil rights leader with my Social Studies teacher. Honestly, I have no memory of who that was but just remember the ride along.

Anyway, MLK JR. was a huge influence in my life. Later when I meet B and he was a Quaker and conscientious objector I was over the moon. ( and in Love)…

Well, right now we need some help in this country as was witnessed by those absolutely horrible teenagers taunting the Elder Native American. Those kids should be sent to a reservation to live and work for a year and find out what it’s really like to be a native person.
