Frugal Friday

I calculated our groceries, and according to the receipts I have, we came in at $550 for groceries. I think for the 3 of us that’s very good. I think eating from the freezer makes a difference. Of course, when that food is gone I’ll need to restock.

My new budget starts Monday, so I might need more groceries for Christmas then. I plan on making the Polish cookies and they do take a lot of eggs and heavy cream. I’ll either hit up Trader Joes or just go down here to the Holiday.

I know our PGE bill is going to be over $300 so that’s not frugal but we need to be warm when it’s 32 degrees outside:) Our water bill is way down since it’s winter but it never goes below $70 with all of the MV water fees.

My gas was around $150, probably because gas is at the lowest I’ve seen it at 3.89. I know B has to fill the truck next week which he only does once a month. I’ll fill the Santa Fe on Monday before I swim. The rest of the week will be home days so no driving for the most part.

Frugal Friday

It was raining heavily yesterday down to infusion. There’s more rain coming in this morning too. I think the pattern will continue for the next few days. This morning my daughter will take B to his PET scan. Unfortunately, it is in Sacramento, so there will be traffic and rain. This will be his last appt. till the video visit next week.

Frugal-wise, I went to Costco to get the coffee. Spending $14 at Starbucks for a pound is not something I want to do very often. So with that in mind, I bought 2 bags at Costco. It was very busy at 1pm, which is a time I rarely go. I’m usually there at 9:30 and there are fewer people. It was okay and I got it done. I spent $180 and $$25 of that was champagne. The rest was food and $20 for TP and Toothpaste. So food ended up $124 or so. It’s not too bad overall.

I don’t think I need much from the store next week unless it’s some salad stuff. That’s the week before Christmas so I want to avoid stores if I can. I’m making our traditional lasagna and I might do a small ham.

I was able to submit my LLS for insurance. What a blessing. My grant is less than half of what it was last year, so I’ll probably run out of funds before my next sign-up period. I think they have so many people applying that a smaller grant allows more people to get some funding. It is still a huge saving for us.

Today, I want to go through the fridge and clean it. I have the leftover turkey chili I need to freeze and there’s a small amount of black beans too. Since I’m home for the day I can tick off some things on my list.

Menu Monday

Using my master one month plan, this is what I have for the upcoming week.

Sunday ( last night ), was egg salad sandwiches. Easy and I didn’t feel like cooking anything.

Monday- I plan on a quiche using a store-bought pastry. I’ll do Swiss cheese, a few veggies, and I have some cream to use up too.

Tuesday- I’ll probably do black Beans. Either black bean soup or chili.

Wednesday- Homemade mac and cheese with salad. We’re still getting the romaine lettuce from the garden.

Thursday- I think a tofu scramble with potatoes. I still have half a bag of Costco’s Yukon gold potatoes so I want to use them up.

Friday- pizza of some sort

Saturday- TBD

Today, I have my labs and then I’ll head down to Roseville to get gas at Costco and go into Winco for a few things. I need some fresh produce, and I’d like to get the stuff for the Christmas lasagna. Then I’ll head up to infusion. B should be done by 10 am.

After we’re home, I’ll work on the kitchen zone and get some of that done. I’m planning on being home on Tuesday, so I can finish it then.

I also want to sit down and write up some goals for 2025. At this point, we have NO RV reservations as we don’t know how long B’s recovery will be. I’m hoping that we can at least plan a couple of trips starting in June. or maybe one longer trip. I guess it’s a wait-and-see situation.

Simple sunday

I slept pretty awful last night. I guess the dex caught up with me, so I didn’t walk, and I don’t plan on going to the gym. Life happens.

I did have a very nice afternoon yesterday alone in the house as my daughter took B to infusion. Since it was only going to be one bag she stayed and went over to the new Trader Joe’s to get a few things. They still didn’t get home till 5:15 though. He’ll still need to go in Monday for another bag. I guess they couldn’t do the 2 because of the time factor. Hopefully this is the end of this with transfusions. the next step is the PET scan and then consult with Stanford.

So I read and finished another Baldacci. He’s such a good writer, it’s hard to put his books down. I have 2 more to read from the library.

A blogger over at The Humble Bungalow, who lives in BC, in a beautiful bungalow house, took a tumble and got some cuts and a concussion. Apparentley, her hip just went out on her and she fell. After all was said and done, she decided to get some walking poles. so that got me thinking when my knee buckled under me and I fell flat on my back. Fortunately, nothing got hurt but I decided to buy some walking poles from Amazon. They came yesterday so I plan on walking around our driveway and see how it is to use them. In the past, I’ve used one pole for stability but now 2, I might need to get the hang of them.

I made another Tartine baguette this morning. It’s still not as burnished brown on top as I’d like, so I think I’ll try his suggestion which is to put a wet kitchen towel in a pan and let that create steam. I’ll try that next time. I need to work on a menu plan for the week. I have my master one month plan but that is generally more like taco Tuesday, pasta Wednesday, so I need to firm up specifics. I would like to work thru a few more things in the freezer.

I just finished the bathroom swish and swipe and the linen bed sheets are in the wash. I’m also airing out the comforter outside on the line.

Well off to get a few more things ticked off my list.

Menu Monday

First off, B has done really well with this last chemo. He’s been engaged and has had energy(some). So that’s very positive.

Sunday night- we had spaghetti with Rao’s sauce and some meatballs

Monday- Tamales and rice with salad

Tuesday- Quiche of some sort

Wednesday- Brinner

Thursday- TBD??

Friday- I’ll do a pizza, either homemade or take out

Saturday- Soup of some sort, I’m thinking a split pea.

The pool was nice this morning but busy. Everyone was doubled up in the lanes. Then I went to Costco to return an item and got some ink for my HP printer. Also milk, eggs, bread, cookies, and some cheese.

Our weather continues to be lovely. Sunny and temperatures in the mid 60’s.

Simple Sunday

I went to the gym this morning. I did about 30 minutes of weights and 20 on the treadmill. From there I went to Goodwill to get 2 champagne glasses. I found 2 that matched. They’re kind of cheap but that’s ok. We need 2 so we have a total of 6 for Christmas.

I’m home now and plan on tidying up. I think I’ll do a 10-minute tidy in each zone. Yesterday I re-did the entryways with cedar boughs and red berry faux flowers. I need to clean off the patio table as it is just a catch-all for gardening stuff.

My son is going to spend the night after he visits his friends. I plan on making spaghetti with Rao’s sauce. I have some beef so I can make a beef sauce also. The lettuce in the garden didn’t freeze with our last frost so we have lettuce still, kale, and chard. So I’ll make a salad. I need to plan next week’s menu so I’ll do that later too.

It’s cloudy today but quite a bit warmer. We had a nice walk in the park and no one was there. Maybe because it’s Thanksgiving weekend.

We got our Ikea tree up and lights on it too. I think I’ll wait to put on some ornaments till later this week. I put out the little Christmas houses and I put a battery-operated candle in each one. I doubt I’ll do too much more but I’ll check my bins.

Well, that’s about it at mi casa!

How Flylady and decluttering changed my life.

First a comment about Flylady. When I started with FL, there was none of the bat-shit crazy stuff she spouts today. She never mentioned religion per se or anything remotely conspiracy-related. Of course, this was back in 2010 or so and things weren’t quite as crazy as they are now. So if you happen to go to her channel be ready to see a wall of weird crosses behind her etc. I only go to the website which is now handled by someone else. I do that only to check in to what the zone is.

So without further ado, FL did change my life when I was overwhelmed with everything. Personally, when I see Youtubers like Minimal Mom, Shannon Torres, etc, I can see their need for some control in their lives, and decluttering and minimalism work for them. I felt the same.

By the time I was diagnosed with myeloma in 2005, I was heavy into collecting everything mid-century. I was doing craft fairs to sell stuff and always on the hunt for Life magazines, collectibles, etc. So after my diagnosis and subsequent year of treatment, everything came to a halt. Our small house was packed to the gills and messy. It was always clean but there was just too. much. stuff.

I think it was around 2010 that I stumbled upon FL. I wasn’t so much into minimalism at that time but FL’s plan included decluttering and getting rid of excess. I think the most valuable thing for me was her zone concept and cleaning your house by zones. I still do that today although it is modified to fit what I need. I would highly recommend the zone method as every 5 weeks you then deep clean the one zone. If your house is bigger with more bedrooms you would need to add some zones. So the zone concept really changed how I kept up with the house and cleaned.

In addition, her daily tasks really kept me focused. Daily tasks included clean/clear counters and surfaces, swish and swipe the bathroom, one load of laundry a day, sweep the kitchen floor and keep the sink clear of dishes. I implemented with the whole family, NO dishes in the sink at bedtime.

She is one of the original influencers who coined the 15-minute decluttering time. Basically, do what you can in 15 minutes, use a timer, and then when it’s up you’re done. That is how I started the great decluttering. So much stuff left our house and barn. I gave lots of the more valuable things to a friend who had a big house so it fit in well.

I haven’t missed a thing. I didn’t take pictures of all the stuff and I would recommend you do. It’s a great way to look back and go, oh yeah I remember that.

So, the biggest change was how I began to see our very small house. Since it is just 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, we were always challenged with not enough space. My office area used to be my daughter’s room and my son had the small bedroom. In hindsight I would have done things differently but as said hindsight is always 20/20.

Now I see we have enough room since I got rid of anything that wasn’t serving a purpose or that I/we loved. Honestly, I’d love to get rid of more stuff, mainly furniture but each piece we own is functional. We have to sit somewhere:0

So I went from overwhelmed to organized. Maximalist to minimalist. Compared to die-hard minimalists, I still probably have too much stuff( Catherine Holm , anyone), but hey, it’s my definition of being minimal. Pretty much what you see is what I have. I have very little storage space, so… I mean I do have Christmas stuff, my vintage Halloween, a tiny bit of Easter/Spring but not things unknown in drawers.

All the areas of our small house work for us and I’m very glad that even after 14 years, we’re still trying to ”Pare down to the essence, but don’t remove the poetry” Leonard Koren.

Dark Days Ahead…

Well, all I can say is if this is what America wants, then they deserve exactly what they’ll get.

I am/will not watch another minute of the racist orange baboon. I can hardly think about Melania Trump back as first lady. Truly Awful! What have they done???

Simple Sunday

I had a nice walk this morning. No one else was there. It’s pretty dark at 6am but daylight savings starts in a month so 6 will be 5 am. After getting home I did few things and then went to the gym.

After that, I went into the store to get more Gatorade for B. Hopefully his kidneys aren’t too stressed. The shots resume tomorrow. It’s going to be a long week.:(

I started some brown rice for dinner and will bake a delicata squash too. Not sure what else at this point. I’ll check the freezer and see what I have to use.

This week I won’t be able to swim at all so that’s a bummer. But I can get to the gym after my Velcade on Thursday so I’ll probably do that. I also have library books to return. I do need to go to Costco and maybe Winco. I haven’t been to Trader Joe’s in a long time. Maybe after one of the appts, I’ll stop in there. B can sit in the car if he’s not up for going in. I’d be concerned about germs since his hemoglobin is so low.
