Still smokey and jam making!

Well, we had one day where the smoke cleared but it’s been back ALL week. It’s so hazy and the air quality is poor. My husband was up at Lake Tahoe and said you couldn’t hardly see the lake. Terrible.

I’ve been busy with jam making and putting up the start of tomatoes.

I went and picked up my flat of blackberries on Monday and Tuesday made  8 half pints of Blackberry sauce. I don’t like to add a lot of sugar so it never really gels which is fine by me. I like the sauce on pancakes and toast.

Then I made up some quick tomato sauce from the tomatoes I had from the garden.

IMG_1479.jpg Not enough for the winter but a start. I will call around to find some seconds soon.

This morning I took out the rest of the blackberries that I froze and made 6 more little jars.

These will be for gifts at Christmas. I like these small jars and they are hard to find so when I saw them the other day I picked up another case.

I want to can some cucumbers but haven’t found the Pickle Crisp that is recommended for canning pickles. Any home canners out there with advice on is this necessary??

Today was a gym day and TADA……my first back on the recumbent bike since my foot rest began over 9 weeks ago. Of course, the fracture had happened way before that but I was too stubborn to stop walking.  Still, I was pleased and I see how it is tomorrow.

Everyone is off somewhere today but B will be home by 4pm or so.

I’m going over to the koffee klatch to see who shows up. I haven’t been in a while.

Tonight I think I’m making some sandwiches for dinner but we’ll see.

Simple Sunday

The smoke from the fire has mostly moved out and the air quality is better. There’s a slight breeze which may not be good later in the day as it warms up.

I’ve been to the gym and am now home thinking about what next to do. Here’s the zucchini bread.

IMG_1472.jpg

It’s a really good recipe and it did puff up. I thought it was way to little batter in the pans but it was fine. I will make another batch this week as I have more zucchini coming in. I may go get some mini loaf pans.

Then here’s the Tartine bread

IMG_1474.jpg

It had a great sourdough flavor. I have another batch in the fridge that I’ll bake up this week as well.

I’m in the kitchen zone this week so I may start that today and get the cabinets windexed.

I’m cooking chicken tiki marsala in the crockpot and then later I will do some tofu in a pan. I’m planning on cooking some organic long grain white rice with it.

We went for a lovely walk in the park this morning. I sure do miss my daily walks but soon enoughI’ll get back to a more regular schedule.

Tomorrow I’m excited to go pick up my flat of blackberries from a local farm. I’m planning to make jam on Tuesday.

Five on Friday on Saturday!

The day sorta got away from me yesterday. IMG_1471.jpg

I made 5 small jars of salsa and 2 bigger ones. These were all our own tomatoes so that was a big plus.

I doubt we’ll get enough tomatoes for all the sauce I need for winter but I will get some. Based on last years supply I probably need about 18 freezer bags of sauce. I may try and can some but freezing is easier.

Then I decided to make up the sourdough leaven for a Tartine bread. I have the one loaf rising in the bread basket form and I’ll cook that in an hour or so.

My oncology appointment went well. I told him about the stress fracture and he did say ‘repetitive’ movement. So maybe it was just walking every day. Who knows?  My foot is still bothering off and on. Kinda weird. He suggested a DEXA scan so I will do that sometime this fall.  I did have one around 14 years ago that was normal. That was about a year before I was diagnosed with myeloma.

Then we headed to Costco and spent a small fortune. B bought a small or I guess it’s called ‘dorm ‘ refrigerator to replace the tiny funky one he had. It was a good deal at $130. Now we could get milk and OJ at Costco as there would room to keep them out in the barn.

Today, I’m making 2 zucchini loaves of bread from a Smitten Kitchen recipe. She said to use 2 loaf pans but it looked like it wasn’t very full but we’ll see how they turn out.  I plan on freezing one sliced so we can pull out a slice when we want one in the fall-winter. If the recipe is a good one, I’ll make a few more, maybe to give as gifts.

Tonight I think I’m going to make burgers/veggie burgers for dinner.

It’s very very hazy here from the Carr fire. Hopefully, it’ll clear out and the fire will get put out.

Stranger things and homemade pasta!

So, I saw the foot doctor on Tuesday and it was odd( again)!! First, they kept me waiting 45 minutes and the only other patient was an elderly woman.  I do not like it when doctor offices make patients wait. Oh, I can see a few minutes or if there’s an emergency, but this seemed just poor timing on the office staff part.

Then I get in there, and he never looks at my foot or presses on the top( meta dorsal (sp??)bones where the fracture was). Then he’s looking at the exact same x-ray as the first one and says, well, it looks like it’s healing.  Whaaaatttt! It’s the same xray that last time you said it was a fracture thru the bone and not just a nondisplaced one.

For a second, I thought, did I miss something?? Did I get another xray and somehow forgot??? It was weird. Then he says do you want to follow up in 3 months? I said, no if it bothers me more I’ll let you know. NOT GOING TO happen. I’ll call someone else.

Anyway, it was all odd.

Then I’m beelining it home, turn on to our road and there are cars backed up all over the place. So in our driveway, a huge oak had fallen across the road and took out some power lines. So, at first, I thought I could just walk up the driveway but the patrolman said no the tree is across the whole driveway. I decided to walk over to the Holiday Market and get a sandwich since by now it was 1pm.  By the time I was done, PGE had cleared the line but the tree wasn’t their responsibility but the property owners. So, I had to park my car and walk up.

ODD, ODD, ODD!!!  WEll, the owners finally called someone and they cut up the tree enough to get a car by. So this giant oak was completely rotten at the base and filled with carpenter ants. The leaves were all still green but not the inside and down it came. Actually, it’s kinda scary to think if I was driving up right when it happened, I’d be squished.

So, today is my oncology appointment, and hopefully, there are no surprises. Well, I know my results so that’s all good.

Then we are going to Costco to pick up dog medications and some things. I’m hoping to be in and out quickly.

At a different Goodwill, I found another pasta maker and it was brand new in box. It’s Imperia. So this one did come with the clamp and I thought well I’ll try it and compare to the Atlas I got for $ 3.00.  The Atlas is older and has some rust spots where the handle goes in, not on the cutters but the other is new.

Here’s a first run of the lasagna noodles. IMG_1465.jpg

Then cooked.

Here’s the ricotta filling.IMG_1466.jpg

Then layering..

Then the final product half eaten.

It was absolutely heavenly. Making fresh pasta is so easy.

Now, I think the older Atlas worked a smidge better than the Imperia. But I can’t decide yet so I’m going to try again later this week. The clamp on the Imperia didn’t work well in the model but actually worked great in the Atlas. Go figure.  Also, I could use the Atlas on the stainless steel island but not the Imperia as the clamp didn’t quite fit. So I moved that to a different counter that was not as easy to use. So, I’m undecided. But when I went to Youtube, the Atlas was number one and the Imperia number 5. Still, the Imperia is brand new, the other older.  I’ll do another round soon.

OH, the zucchini chocolate bread was delicious and not sweet at all.

Lammas

We are the Celtic cross-quarter of Lammas.

I can always feel the change in the earth at cross-quarters. I don’t know why really but I do. Maybe something about that pagan witch stuff.

Lammas is a celebration of the wheat and other harvests. I read that a loaf of wheat bread was a traditional offering. Who knows? sounds right though.

So, raise a glass to the God, Lugh!!
