Organizing is not decluttering

I’ve been on another round of decluttering. I don’t have lots of stuffed areas in my small home but I do have things that I no longer need or find useful. I didn’t make the connection for myself about visual clutter till way into my decluttering journey. Now I realize, that because I’ve always been a visual person, I need to see space around me in my home. That’s also the reason all the rooms of my house, the bathroom excluded, are painted Simple White by Benjamin Moore. I need that continuity.

If you’re just organizing your stuff, you’re really just rearranging stuff that probably needs to go. Moving stuff around doesn’t get rid of it. reI like organizing things using the container method. This method by Dana K White is about keeping only what fits in any container. The rest is decluttered. It’s a good method and very efficient at getting to visually see what you have in any given space.

This month we took a bunch of things to the Placer Food Bank. Some of this was the ‘pandemic’ food I just knew I would never use but someone else might. Especially all the Mountain House dehydrated food meals that I thought someone homeless could use as they are complete meals. I still have a few random things to give them but I’ll wait till at least it’s a bag full.

We also took a load of ‘nice’ things to the Assistance League thrift. This included 2 pairs of dress-type shoes( Merrells, and Naots), and some other misc. I’ve already got a few more things ready to go including the Food Saver vacuum sealer that I haven’t used since summer and then it was only for frozen corn. I also have the beautiful quilt frame ready to go. I have it on Pay it Forward but so far no takers.

It’s important to reevaluate where you are in life and what things are helping in your space and what things are just in the way or cluttering up your home. I have decluttered pretty extensively since 2011( I checked an old file I had from when I started Flylady). So much has left my home and storage areas but it doesn’t really stop as there’s always something to get rid of. I’m a firm believer that the things I don’t need may benefit someone else. Plus, now being in my 70’s, there’s a whole other level to what I need/want. I need things in my home to be simple and easy to maintain. Plus, there’s the safety factor of how things are. We know we’ll need to change out the tub for just a shower unit and I’m planning on working that into a project for this summer. Since we only have one bathroom, summer will be best because we can use Rubi’s bathroom while we do this. The floor will need to be redone and sink, toilet while we’re at it. Of course, this is going to have to be budgeted for. But what we do know is the tub needs to go for safety.

We still have some boxes of photos to go through. B has been putting some on the cloud to preserve them. I also have gone through these boxes previously and gotten rid of tons of photos that were duplicates, of random nature pictures, and just blurry or strange.

Once the weather changes, I’ll go back out to the barn and clean the restaurant shelves, and decide what to do with the empty bins. There are maybe 8 bins or so. I might take some of the older bins we have and switch to these as they are smaller in size and fit those shelves perfectly. But, we are in a rainy period here in Northern California so it might be a while. The next week is forecast to be raining off and on.

Simple Sunday

A lovely Sunday morning walk. They’ve fixed some of the path with new asphalt so it’s much nicer and has fewer cracks to trip on. I use my walking stick in my left hand which does help with stability but mostly I keep it with me so that the AH dog walker moves over when he’s walking in the middle of the path with his dog to his far-left which puts the dog straight in our path. With his passive-aggressiveness, he usually waits till the last second to move over to the side of the path he’s supposed to be walking. Remember driving, bicycles, etc, you stay to your right. Oh well, it was still a very pleasant walk.

I came home and started working on the bedroom closet which is our ONLY closet. I did a little more reorganizing and there’s still some more to do. I’ve decided for the most part to not keep extra pantry stuff in there except for the Costco size cereal boxes. Plus probably the extra coffee bean bags. Last time I went to Ikea I bought a few extra white boxes and now I have all the stuff I use for Easter, Christmas, and Hanukkah in those boxes on the top shelf. I don’t have a lot of clothes so I hang my T-shirts, denim shirts and the 2 sweaters I have. I’m not sure what my end goal is in there but definitely eliminating as much extra stuff as possible.

Then I did the kitchen zone : here’s a few photos.

Someday, we’ll have money to redo the kitchen. Not the lay-out but the counters and the cabinets.

The new sunroom windows are almost in. What happened was the nice old redwood windows had just gotten too water damaged and water was seeping in and getting on the floor when it rained. Granted it is just a porch but we use it a lot for wood, cat litter etc. So now there are windows that will open and that will help with air flow.

Simple Sunday or is it??

Well, it is going to be a lovely sunny day so I’m going to enjoy that. Our yard is looking so pretty with daffodilsUNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_367.jpg, and the lawns turning bright green. Here’s the flowering cherry which is the prettiest bloom I’ve seen in a few years. Last year these trees were hit with a late frost and all the blooms died.

In the far background you can see some of the hoarders stuff across the fence! More daffodils.

Today is a gym day and B has platelets. I’m going to drop him off and then go over to the gym.

Sunday is sheet day so I’m doing those and since it’s so nice out, I thought I’d do our comforter as well.

There’s not a lot on the agenda for today so I guess that does make it a simple day.

I’m reading a new release in ‘home organizing’ called’The Home Edit’. 91xVeNilguL._AC_UL436_.jpg It’s nicely presented with lovely pictures. So far I’ve gleaned a few ideas about organizing stuff. Nice book, if you’re needing some help putting things together. I’m going to pull everything out of the refrigerator today and give it a good clean.

This week we are in the Entryway, dining room(which we don’t really have) and porches. I’m planning to wash windows sometime this week as well.

Update:

We went to town. I went to the gym and then was going to pick B up but he had a reaction(second time) to the platelets. So he had to stay and then they sent him to the ER.

He’s home now and all seems ok.

Dinner is roast chicken.

Sunday to do list

Yikes, we did a lot already and it’s just after 1 pm.

B and I walked 2.7 miles. This is the most I’ve walked yet. That was at 7am. Then breakfast, went to town. First stop Staples for more of the photo holders. Nope it was 9:45, not open till 10. Onward to the feed store for hay for the birds, nope 9:50 not open till 10.

down to Bel Air to return to extra spices B had gotten me for pickles , yes, they were open. Over to Home Depot for stuff, caulking, a hook ,and something else, can’t remember. Then over to target. Spent way too much, but got a bunch of organizing stuff. An oxo turn thing for my vitamins. A cute shelf thing that stacks the cans, very nice. A new set of fry pans as the ones were using are all scratched. The old ones are Rachel ray . I loved the orange color but they did not last. These new ones are kitchen aid. Not very expensive . My other pans are all clad. All clad my opinion are the best besides Lecruset. Then a new t shirt.

And of course cat food!!! then back to the feed store and staples. Yikes, this is a lot for me.

Then came home made some yummy bread( I had made the dough this morning), and started on the pickles. Then put up the shelf in the pantry and I really like how it stacks them . Very neat.

So, I think I’m going to go read for a while….
