Simple Sunday

A different morning. We went for a walk as usual but then I wanted to go to Ikea for a Hemnes that was on sale. It’s the 2 drawers one and I’ve been waiting for them to come back into stock. Plus they were 15% off so a very good deal. I plan on using this in my office area to corral odds and ends.

So there was no gym day and that’s okay. I wasn’t feeling it anyway.

This week is crazy with appts, which is my least favorite thing. But I’ll persevere through.

We’ve been watching ‘Slow Horses’ with Gary Oldman and it is sooo good. A little confusing at first but then you catch on. I just finished reading Ina Garten’s memoir and like it a lot. What a talented woman. Maybe a little over the top with a Type A personality but still I have a lot of respect for her.

I’m reading the new Thomas Perry book, ‘ Pro Bono’. Also excellent.

My son stayed overnight and did a deep clean of my car. It really needed it so I appreciate his effort.

After getting home, I started another Meyer lemon rosemary sourdough. This is a great recipe and seems to work every time.

Here’s the recipe:

88grams of starter

360 grams flour

236 grams water

11 grams salt

1 tsp yeast

Note: I think this recipe would work without the sourdough and just adjust flour and water for the 88 grams of starter and use more yeast.

Mix together to form a loose ball of dough, it will be shaggy. Let rest for 30 minutes and then start your fold and turns. Basically lifting one end of the dough over to the other side. I do this on all four sides if that makes sense. Let rest for 1 hour or so and repeat. I usually forget and just do a few more folds and turns when I remember.

Put in a bucket or bowl and refrigerate overnight. The next morning heat your oven to 475 and keep your dutch over in the oven to heat up. Then take the dough out of the bucket put on parchment paper and do a few tucks and turns( rolling the dough into a ball and turning to create some tension). Then I make a few cuts on the top and put it in the Dutch oven with the top on for 35 minutes. Take the top off and bake for another 15 or so. You can take an internal temp to check if it’s done. anywhere @ 200 degrees is right.

B is not feeling very well so I’m hoping it’s only a passing stomach thing but he’ll call down to Stanford tomorrow and explain what he’s feeling. Hopefully, it’s just a bug.

Well, back to house stuff and reading:)

Simple Sunday

I feel mostly back to normal after our 2 days at Stanford. I was quite tired yesterday but today felt good enough to go to the gym. I did weights and some treadmill.

I also got some sourdough going and I’m trying a new baking method using a Pullman Pan. Everything in preparation is the same, fold and turn, bulk rise, but then you place the dough in the pan and put it in the refrigerator overnight. The pan has a lid that you put on to bake and it gives you a square loaf that is great for toast or sandwiches. I’ll post some pictures and give an evaluation. If the sourdough doesn’t work out I’ll just try a regular yeast bread.

I made up an apple tart using apples from our small tree. The big apple tree had lots of apples but the bugs got into them so most of them went to the deer. I have to go check the Rhode Island Greenings because I think there were a couple of them. Those trees are still fairly young so it’ll be a few years before we see any crops.

We have a few hot days coming up and hopefully, we can close all the windows and it won’t get too hot. I think I saw 99 and 97 so fairly warm:( Well, it is that time of year when it can be cool or hot.

We had a good walk this morning and I plan to keep walking my regular days even when B starts his chemo. I figure the first week he won’t feel like it but by week 2 he should be able to.

I plan on swimming tomorrow and then maybe going over to Winco for a few things. I don’t need a lot but would like to get some Bubbly water and that’s the cheapest place to get it. Depending on how Wednesday shapes up, I could go to the library and the gym while B is in chemo. We need to find out from the nurse how long she/he thinks it’ll be. the doctor seemed to indicate that it’s a fast infusion but the pre-drugs can take some time. That’s like Benadryl and saline.

I scheduled my flu and covid shots for this week too so I’ll be glad to get them done.

I’ve cooked some baked potatoes for dinner and I will make a spinach salad to go with that. I’ll have to check what kind of protein I have because I know I used the tofu up. I need to make up my menus for the month tomorrow so I can plan out what to use up or what I may need to buy.

Monday morning!

Feeling pretty good today. Didn’t sleep well, but usual for dex night. I’ve just finished making granola. And I’m trying a new whole bread recipe from ” the Laurels Kitchen Bread Book” that prudenthomemaker.com suggested. I’ve put it in the bread machine and then will bake in the oven. Not sure how it will come out as it is not a bread machine recipe.

working on home blessing day from Flylady and I’ve done most of the bedroom zone.

I’ve  been thinking a lot about 8 years ago when I was getting ready for my SCT . It was a difficult time to say the least. It was in February I went in for cytoxan, and my main line. That was an overnight in the hospital. Then I did the neupogin shots for 10 days. That required my husband to drive every morning 1/2 an hour to the clinic.  Then it was on to the stem cell retrieval , an all day process , but at least just one. Then it was 10 days later on February 29, yes a leap year, I was admitted and well the rest is history.

It was such a hard year, but then I had 4 great years of no treatment except aredia. I have since relapsed 3x, but each time revlimid has worked and that is what I’m on now and doing great, so to speak.

I think this is coming up because it’s soon my new birthday but also thinking about tom Brokaw . Who will he reach out to? there is the myeloma beacon support, the facebook myeloma group, and the myeloma list serve, and of course Pat Killingsworth blog. All of which I read daily and have learned so much. BUT, it wasn’t like that when I started out. There was no support that I reached out for and most of the above didn’t exist as far as I know. I had one myeloma buddy. Richard Pleau. He’s gone now but we did talk and share and I learned I needed that. So, my thoughts of Tom Brokaw being famous , will that isolate him, will he reach out to the myeloma community and hopefully won’t be bombarded with people trying to talk to him. Or will we just give him space and answer when we can .

I don’t know the answer but I do hope he gets support from those of us who have walked this road for a while. There’s a lot still to learn and he’s only just beginning.
