Still raining, and there’s some flooding in the area. Not so much where I am, but the Yuba River is flooding, and there’s some flooding near Yuba Gap. i hope the rain lets up.
I again decided not to go out. Just not feeling it for some reason. I’m trying to go with how I feel daily, so that’s where it is today. I do need to get to the bank, so maybe I’ll do that later.
I’m working my way through all our Christmas movies, Die Hard, It’s a Wonderful Life, etc. I still have Muppet Christmas and Chevy Chase.
Menu:
Last night we had Asian salad and TJ’s orange chicken
Tuesday- turkey chili from the freezer
Wed-Christmas Eve- Our tradition is always Fondue with baguette, veggies, apples, and whatever else.
Thursday- Christmas Day- Cheese lasagna, Steak (for the meat eaters), baked potatoes, brussels sprouts, roasted butternut squash, and dessert?
Friday- I’ll probably do a pizza
Saturday- soup of some sort
What kind of dinner do you all make for Christmas? Is there a tradition? Curious minds want to know.
not doing much…three years since i lost my beautiful sheila…family have not invited me so am on my own. I will spend the day with my adorable adopted kitten, “blossom”, she is so affectionate, the ultimate therapy cat!
I’m not sure we will ever get over the loss of our dear ones. Even at 3 years, you still miss and love her. I’m sure I will be the same with Barclay. We spent our whole life together. I love that you have a kitten. We do love our 6 kitties.
We celebrate Christmas Eve with a Swedish Table with herrings, smoked salmon, meatballs etc etc. Christmas Day we go to friends, probably for a barbecue, and Boxing Day is leftovers.
That sounds delicious. I’m doing some smoked salmon for Christmas breakfast. Is it cold for a barbecue?
I’m in New Zealand so it is summer here so a barbecue is fine 🙂
I guess, with Kiwis in your blog name, I should have figured that out. Ha ha!!
Christmas noonday we will be dining for the 2nd year with my elderly father at the Assisted Living home he lives at. The kitchen puts on a pretty decent (standard) feast and that way we can spend some time with him more than the usual drop-in visits I do 3x a week. Christmas evening, Warren’s adult children are coming over for some snacks and munchies; they will likely have a large midday meal with their elderly grandmother on their mom’s side and as David said, “We,re not going to want a second big meal.” Works for me! So I guess those are our “new” traditions as we keep moving forward.
That’s special, you can spend Christmas with him. I’m sure you wonder how many more there will be. Also nice to have his children at your house. We really don’t have any other family except my brother. He did come for Thanksgiving, so I need to check in with him for Christmas.
We used to do the big feast for Christmas. A few years ago we learned that going out to dinner (Chinese restaurant) with some family members is so much easier. That is our new tradition and it makes for a very peaceful Christmas/solstice holiday, No prep, they feed us whatever we want, they send us home with lots of leftovers, and then they do the cleanup. Priceless.
You know that is something I’ve always wanted to do. Maybe next year. I love the idea of no prep and no clean up…
Stay safe and dry! We are having lasagna for dinner, with bread, a salad, some type of vegetable, and some type of dessert. The other meals of the day are still being determined.
Do you make a cheese lasagna, or does it have meat? I always do just cheese since Barclay was a vegetarian.
Chris, it started out being a classic Bolognese with a bechamel sauce, but I ran out of time and substituted ricotta for the white sauce.
Some years back, we switched to attending Christmas Day morning Mass instead of midnight eve service at our parish church some 2 hours away. Travelling was still tiring but the change left our Christmas eve relatively free. Too tired to do massive cooking after Christmas morning service, I switched to a good Christmas eve lunch & dinner. The eve lunch would be Indian biriyani and the accompanying salad and vegetarian curry and also spicy fish patties. Dinner would be my hubby’s roast chicken with various sides which the kids would handle. That arrangement allowed me to rest and recharge for the next day’s travelling to church. Another wonderful thing was that after morning Mass the next day, we had great leftovers to come home to. It made for a restful and gentle end to Christmas Day which for me is the perfect Christmas.
Sounds really delicious.
I like your Christmas as it doesn’t have you too long in the kitchen. It’s wonderful to be able to cook for family & to watch them enjoy the repast but nicer still if it doesn’t tire you out too much. Do watch that injured foot, though.
This is probably one of the easier Christmas dinners I’ve done. And I’ve never cooked a steak for Christmas so fingers crossed.
You’re cooking with love. That will make all the difference. I hope you’ll let us know how it went.
